Incorporating Quality From the Start

Wednesday, November 19, 2019

Quality is important in any production line, but when manufacturing mechanical cable assemblies, the quality of the assembly comes down to break strength and other vital performance considerations. At Carl Stahl Sava Industries, we pride ourselves on the quality of our mechanical cable assemblies, parts, fittings, pulleys and tools. Our internal processes follow ISO 9000 quality management standards and we adhere to rigorous quality control procedures throughout manufacturing. The result? Products that don't just meet expectations, but consistently exceed them.

Here's how we do it.

Leaving Nothing to Chance

The International Organization for Standardization or ISO is a global, governing body that sets standards for quality across a wide expanse of entities where standards are required. ISO 9000 is a set of accepted standards manufacturers use to define their internal procedures for quality. Sava is certified to ISO 9001:2015 standards for the design and manufacture of mechanical cables and cable assemblies. Sava regularly undertakes independent audits to ensure our company always meets and exceeds the highest industry quality standards.

Demanding Specifications

The markets Sava serves include medical devices, surgical robotics, exoskeletons, aerospace and a variety of industrial industries. These highly competitive and demanding industries have no tolerance for substandard or nonconforming products. This is why every mechanical cable and cable assembly Sava produces must meet a long list of dimensional and performance requirements. When developing custom products, Sava’s engineering teams go to great lengths to ensure customer needs are understood and designs satisfy the most rigorous expectations.

Verifying Fit and Performance

While achieving consistently high quality is about controlling processes, it also requires extensive and consistent inspections. Dimensional checks include:

  • Measuring cable diameter

  • Specifying swage diameter

  • Checking length before and after swage

In addition, Sava conducts functional testing on all its products. Such quality testing verifies that the product will exceed the performance goals. For example, Sava’s tensile strength testing confirms the yield point of our mechanical cable assemblies always exceeds the specifications identified in the product’s drawing.

Quality Control in Manufacturing

When a machine or production line is set up to manufacture a mechanical cable assembly, Sava undertakes a series of checks to ensure conformance to quality requirements. To begin, the first article manufactured is inspected by the assembly operator. This testing is followed by an inspection conducted by Sava’s quality control staff. Only when all quality testing personnel sign-off, is the product and machinery dedicated to production deployed into a production run.

During the production process, in-line inspection protects against any drift or change in either machine settings or materials used, ensuring that the first piece is identical in quality to the millionth. Should a deviation be found, the batch is quarantined and the process reviewed before any decision on what needs to happen next takes place.

Sava’s quality control team executes ongoing checks when the order is finished as well. The product is selected at random for further inspection and testing, once again ensuring that nothing has been missed. This additional layer of quality assurance checks helps Sava guard against unpredictable events that could otherwise jeopardize product quality.

Efficient And Effective

Often, Sava’s customers need their mechanical cable assemblies quickly in order to compete in fiercely demanding markets. Sava’s quality control staff will work alongside our engineering and production teams to get first article approval as quickly as possible, making it easier for you to take your latest innovations to market. Inspection and testing often can operate in parallel with the larger engineering and manufacturing tasks, so the order is ready to ship almost as soon as the last piece comes off the line.

Thorough and Systematic

The inspection and functional testing Sava does protects customers from non-conforming product, but that's only the beginning of the benefits to our quality processes. Honoring ISO 9001:2015 standards means quality is built-in to every stage of Sava’s engineering, production and manufacturing processes. At Sava, every step of your production project happens systematically, ensuring that customers get exactly what they expect when they sought our mechanical cable company.
