Sophisticated Laparoscopic Assembly with No Room For Production Errors

Sophisticated Laparoscopic Assembly with No Room For Production Errors

Tuesday, July 1, 2019

This intricate, laparoscopic medical assembly involves a long list of machining operations included in its construction. And one error, anywhere down the production line, could create quality issues in each ensuing phase of construction. This is why Sava must get each stage of production perfect in order to ensure a predictable quality experience straight through production.

"This is an incredibly complex assembly that comprises multiple operations," said Joe Falletta, Sava's Machining Supervisor. "Each operation needs to be executed perfectly or the next won't work. And there's no room for a single error through production. That's what our customer is asking of us: not just to build it perfectly, but to build it to perfection hundreds, thousands and millions of times."

Used to assist surgeons performing GYN and bariatric laparoscopic procedures, Sava's assembly helps the doctor by holding the laparoscope in place during the operation, effectively providing the surgeon with a third arm from which to maneuver.

What makes this assembly particularly challenging to produce is that it includes a fitting threaded at post swaging, through the entire length of the fitting, which would be prohibitive to do prior to swaging. This laparoscopic assembly contains fittings machined in-house, then annealed, then swaged to 7x7 stainless steel cable, then threaded internally and externally (top-to-bottom), and then finally has a ball and shank swaged to it as well. All operations considered, this product comprises nine unique machining operations to complete one unit, meaning constant care and attention must be applied throughout production. So, the first unit matches the 10,000 specifically because Sava is monitoring the line uninterrupted.
